Acrylic Paints: the versatile and easy to handle medium.

Subconscious by Tibor Rényi

In recent time the Acrylic paint has acquired mind blowing popularity. The artist grade acrylic paints have become a favourite medium among the leading artist in the world.

What is Acrylic Paints : The substance that works as a binder in this type of paint is acrylic polymer; it dries up as quickly as the artists use it. Once the acrylic colour dries on the paper, the paint becomes water resistant. Amazingly versatile and very easy to use for armature painters and the artists: these are the attracting qualities of the acrylic paint. (Image courtesy Wikimedia Commons)

Qualities of Acrylic colours : The artists using watercolours and oil paints do their best to get the best out of the colours. But acrylic colours possess special qualities the artists need. Its flexibility is unmatched; and its appearance is as good as oil and watercolours. Artists can create any desirable texture by using these media, as acrylics have ability to be used on different surfaces.

In other colours like watercolour and oil colours, the artists have such facilities; but the range of acrylic mediums is much greater. The acrylic paints can be overlaid on many different surfaces, and these paints can be used to adjust their binding characteristics. The acrylic paints are used to build thick layers of paint, too.

How to Use Acrylics : Acrylic paints may be thinned with water and used as washes in the same manner as we use the watercolour. But care should be taken, as the acrylic paints can be made wet even if they are dried on the medium. While adding water to thin the acrylic paints, the artists should remember that if more than twenty five percent to thirty percent of water is used, it would not help forming a stable paint film.

Why Oil Paint Users Prefer Acrylic : The single biggest advantage of using acrylic paints is its drying time. If you use oil paints, while applying an additional layer you will have to wait for the drying of the paints already applied. The oil colours take longer time to be blended on the surface. So it would delay the finishing of a painting. Oil colours have their advantages, too, but those who want to finish a painting by dead line would prefer fast drying medium of acrylic paints.

Care must be taken while buying the art materials like acrylic colours. One must shop from an art material dealer, especially from who deals in artist grade articles. Buy only those materials which are manufactured by well-known companies. (Images Courtesy Photobucket)
