The most important advantage in pencil drawing is its versatility. The tiny tip of a pencil is so resourceful that you feel like a wealthy person while using the pencil, coloured pencil or black, the uses are unlimited.

Value Drawing in Portrait Making

In pencil drawing, the shading is an aspect that exploits an artist’s best skills. The creative shading of pencil can create a picture as beautiful as in any other medium like watercolour and oil colour. Shading in pencil drawing is just like putting different tonal values of colours. The tonal value of the shaded area could refer to the respective colour of the real object.

In painting, by selecting a proper colour and applying that colour in different tonal values, a painter animates his or her mental images on paper and canvases. But the artists using only pencil has to recreate the effects of falling light by doing different shading only. To try showing the three dimensional look by shading is called the value drawing. It is opposite of the line drawing. here there would be no lines, the different areas and planes of the drawing would be marked by the changing value of the shades only. The above portrait is one of the nicest example of such value drawing.

The above pencil drawing of Barbara Cerrera is done using value drawing technique. The falling of light on the face is very well depicted by using tonal values of graphite pencil. Barbara, born in Nicaragua in 1945, is known as Bond Girl in Hollywood. (Image courtesy Wikimedia Commons)
